Cheap campervan hire, priced from the depot you leave from.
Pick-up city and dates are all the search needs. The decisions that change the total — which city, which direction, how many sleeping — are below.
The form asks for city and dates. Everything expensive is decided before that.
-
Which city you collect from
Distance to the first road worth driving, and the cost of getting yourself to the depot.
-
Which direction you drive
Vans pile up in one direction each season. The return trip gets priced into your quote.
-
How many people are sleeping
Not a form field: berths come in fixed sizes, so this is settled when you pick a van. A five-berth for two costs more per person than a two-berth.

Guides for the decision, not the route
One question each, answered for a specific city, direction or group size.
Questions about the route, not the paperwork
Which city should I collect from if I have not decided a route yet?
Start with the coast you want to see and work backwards. A city is only a good start if the first road worth driving is close to the depot — otherwise your first day goes to leaving town.
Does driving one direction beat driving a loop?
Sometimes. A loop means you spend days retracing road you have already seen; a one-way means paying to leave the vehicle somewhere else. Which is cheaper depends on where vans are piling up that season, so it is worth pricing both.
How many people fit comfortably in a two-berth?
Two, and only two. A van that sleeps three with a rooftop tent is a different proposition from one with a bed inside — especially in rain, or when you arrive somewhere late.
When is the worst time to start a trip in the north?
The build-up and wet season change what is reachable, not just how hot it is. Some roads close, some tours stop, and the locals leave. If your plan depends on a specific road being open, check before you commit to dates.
Do I need a 4WD to see the outback?
For the sealed routes to the well-known places, no. A 4WD becomes necessary the moment your plan includes an unsealed road, and the vehicle has to be permitted on that road — which is a question for the terms, not the brochure.
What do I actually save by camping instead of staying in towns?
Money, and time. A paid site is usually cheaper than a room, and a free camp is cheaper again — but free camps are not where the highlights are, and driving to one at dusk is how people end up on a road they should not be on after dark.
